We asked you to get in touch and let us know what you get up to when you’re not sewing, why you love to sew, and what’s on your sewing table right now, among other things. This episode we get to hear from the sister duo Naomi of Spare Room Style and Miriam of Create Hope Inspire, Shannon from Adventures of a Young Seamstress, Amy from Almond Rock & Love Sewing Magazine, and Manju from Sew Manju.

This episode is great for getting different perspectives on why and how we participate in this creative hobby. We love hearing from you and adding more voices to the sewing chat!

This week we talked holiday sewing with the hilarious and enthusiastic Barbara from Sewing on the Edge. She dove into sewing gifts this year and dazzled Lori and Helena with her prolific projects. And Barbara’s book, SEW …The Garment-Making Book of Knowledge: Real-Life Lessons from a Serial Sewist, is now available for pre-order and will be released this May. We got to talk about how that book deal came together, and how she hopes there will be a sequel because she has so much knowledge to share — her first draft was 900 pages!

Amid all the hustle of this time of year, Helena and Lori squeezed in a chat about their favorite subject, sewing. They talked about recent projects and future plans (their endless lists!) and got a chance to hear from 2 amazing bloggers. Hila from Saturday Night Stitch and Sasha from Secondo Piano recorded answers to our nosy questions, and it is such a treat to hear their perspective.

Our questions are:

1. What is your name and where can people find you online (name of your blog and/or company and/or instagram account, etc.)
2. What are you doing when you’re not sewing?
3. Why do you sew?
4. What’s on your sewing table right now?
5. What are you planning to sew in future that you’re excited about?

You also have a chance to chime in with your unique response to our questions! We’d love to hear them and perhaps feature them on a future podcast. We hope CMM can create a community by telling many different stories of our shared love of sewing.

And our friend Maven Maris from SewMaris.com is back to weigh in on the question of if she, as an advanced level seamstress, reads and follows the included pattern instructions in each pattern. When you have that much sewing knowledge, is it really necessary? Honestly, some instructions are not that great, either. We’d love to hear your thoughts on that as well! Do you always follow the directions or do you toss them to the side without a glance?

Get ready for some real life conversation when Lori has the chance to visit Sharadha’s closet for a tour! SweetShard.com is a beautifully styled and photographed blog and is one of our favorites, and Lori gets to dive into the details of Sharadha’s sewing journey through the clothes she’s created. It is a very unique perspective that leads them to discuss creativity, economy, photo styling and the last minute pressure to whip up something new for an event that so many of us face. You’ll want to click over to SweetShard.com for the visual accompaniment to the discussion, too. Such a fun and insightful perspective on sewing!

Episode #12: The Literary Sewing Circle with Melanie from Following the Thread

Lori and I were pretty excited to be contacted by Melanie, who writes at the blog Magpie Makery (now relaunched as Following the Thread), telling us how a previous podcast of ours had inspired her to launch a literary sew along! We were immediately in love with the idea and all on board to do two of our favorite things- read and sew. All three of us got together to discuss the idea and we hope you get inspired to join a sew along yourself!

This podcast we decided to try something new! Instead of a straight interview style format, we thought we’d invite a special guest into our regular Sew Small Talk episode for a more informal discussion of our chosen topic. We’ve been thinking about sewing our own activewear for a while now, so it seemed like the perfect time to invite Dawn of Two On Two Off to come join us. We had a great time exploring the particular challenge of very stretchy fabrics and the specifics of fit during a lot of movement. Dawn really sold us on the practicality of buying a coverstitch machine, too. Lori and Helena are both ready to run out there (haha!) and sew ourselves some workout clothes!

Episode #9 – Missing SewJo and Lori’s trip to Africa

Episode #9 – Missing SewJo and Lori’s trip to Africa

Download the episode here – Missing SewJo and Lori’s trip to Africa

Here is another Sew Small Talk between Helena and Lori – but neither has been sewing much! Does your sewing output sometimes slump? They wanted to overcome this lack of SewJo (sewing motivation) and gathered some> tips and tricks to try themselves and hope maybe these ideas could help their listeners, too.

Lori fills us in on her exciting trip to Africa and the moving reason for her trip. Warning: this episode gets a little graphic as we discuss the horrifying details of Female Genital Circumcision that is currently practiced in many parts of Africa. It may raise some questions with younger listeners. We had to be straightforward about the truth of the practice but hope we don’t offend. Lori’s awesome students are helping to educate us all on what is happening and, more importantly, how AMREF Canada (African Medical Research and Education Foundation) is changing the practice. And Lori unexpectedly found some sewing joy in Kenya, too!
